The beginning
My journey to physiotherapy was not a typical one. In undergrad, I majored in French Studies and worked as a translator and technical writer for a software company. Outside my office work, I lead a very active lifestyle - I ran, swam, played ultimate frisbee, and pole danced. But after a year working at a desk, my body still stiffened and I developed wrist, shoulder, and back aches. Just as everyone else, I attributed it all as a normal part of growing older and part of the job. But I couldn’t accept that I, or my coworkers, should be living with these growing aches until we retire. So, I started a program at work, where I led 20-minute stretch and strengthening sessions. I really enjoyed getting others active and helping them feel looser and younger. Over the months, I saw them get stronger and more flexible and I realised that I want to find a career where I can incorporate helping people and physical activity. This is when I discovered physiotherapy.

The journey
I started shadowing physiotherapists at a neurological clinic, where most patients attending suffered from MS, stroke, or spinal cord injury. Deep down, I didn’t believe that they would improve much from their current baseline and I felt our goal was to help them maintain their current functional abilities. I couldn’t be more wrong. It was incredible seeing how the human body can regain lost function and movement they needed for everyday living. If their condition was severe, we helped patients find new ways to adapt to new baselines and guide them to return to their favourite activities using aids and alternative ways. I learned about hope, potential, and the power of hard work. When I saw patients regain the ability to walk independently, I knew this would be my calling.

The goal
I studied at the University of Brighton in England and worked in inpatient stroke rehabilitation for 2 years. Then, I returned to Canada and joined Rehab Hero to build my skills in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy with the guidance of some of the best in-house mentors. I wanted to give back to those who were in my place years ago.
My goal is to show people how resilient and strong the human body is. I want to instil hope in those who feel defeated and work together to get them to where they want to be. It’s time to embark on the journey together.
