What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is type of hands-on manual therapy aimed to treat various conditions through various forms of soft tissue manipulation and gentle joint mobilizations. The purpose is to prevent, recover, rehabilitate, and relieve pain while also enhancing physical function, promote health, and to relieve mental and physical stress. It has been shown to be effective for the treatment of acute injuries, overuse injuries, chronic pain syndromes, and stress. It can be used after or before any surgeries, as is helpful for neck pain, back pain, joint pain, pulled muscles, arthritis, headaches, and migraine related conditions. At Rehab Hero, RMTs specialize in massages that penetrate into the tissue for lasting relief.

What Should I Expect?

Prior to starting your treatment, you will meet your RMT to complete a full confidential health history so they can understand what you are experiencing. From there a comprehensive assessment will follow that will be used to determine your treatment plan. They may test your range of motion, perform orthopedic tests, or other special tests depending on your primary complaint. You will then have opportunities to discuss your plan and ask any questions. Once you have given your consent to treatment, your therapist will give you time to change if needed and treatment will begin.

Types of Techniques

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage is used to relieve muscle knots and adhesions that can disrupt circulation, cause pain, and limit motion. It helps with chronic muscle pain, and reduces inflammation-related pain caused by conditions like arthritis and tendinitis. This will often create a long lasting effect of decreasing muscle tension and improving muscle recovery. If it’s your first time, know that it is typical to feel muscle soreness over 1-3 days following treatment. This type of therapy does not use massage oil.

Sport Massage

Unlike a spa massage or Thai massage, sport massage aims to improve your function in daily life. Although used to help athletes, the average desk jockey can also benefit from this type of massage. Sport massage combines massage with stretching and muscle activation techniques to engage your muscles actively for longer lasting relief and therapeutic effect. Similar to deep tissue massage, it is not uncommon to experience muscle soreness over 1-3 days following treatment. The relief experienced make it easy to become a massage addict.

Cupping

Cupping is an Ancient Chinese technique that is used to help increase blood flow and to relieve muscle tension by pulling on fascia. The suction helps to draw blood to the surface to promote circulation within the area. This technique can be applied in static positions or during movement depending on your goals. It is not uncommon to have a dark purple or red circular mark after treatment that can last up to 1 week.

Scraping

Scraping is the common term used for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) which uses a tool to increase fascial movement and blood circulation in the body. Similar to cupping, it is normal to experience some bruising or redness in the area of application. This technique works great for tissues that are tough to massage like tendons or ligaments in addition to muscles.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release Therapy (MRT) refers to the treatment of both muscles and fascia. Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds muscle bellies to hold them intact. When restricted, fascia can lead to symptoms of muscle tightness, stiffness and pain.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy refers to the treatment of myofascial trigger points that are found within the muscles and fascia. Trigger Point therapy includes sustained deep pressure to muscles and fascia to help reduce muscular tension. The more accurate the trigger point therapy is, the better the results.

Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilizations is a manual therapy technique that uses the passive movement of a joint which provides a therapeutic effect such as decreasing pain or increasing range of motion. There are 5 classifications for Joint mobilizations grade 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) can use grade 1-4 joint mobilizations.

Medical Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture is a modality that can be utilized within massage therapy if the RMT has completed extra training and is a certified medical acupuncture provider. Fine solid needles are inserted into anatomical structures and can be stimulated either manually or with electricity to help achieve therapeutic results.
