What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive & conservative therapy for the neuromusculoskeletal system.

We provide a drug-free and manual alternative to health care. It is considered one of the largest primary care professions in Ontario, with a focus on joint, muscle, nerve, tendon and ligament health. It is not just a pain-response therapy - chiropractors provide a preventative care for the spine, pelvis, and extremities. Using a series of biomechanical and orthopaedic tests and assessments, we formulate a diagnosis and plan of management.

Depending on whats revealed in the assessment, we will use a combination of specific treatments to get you to full function. Following a thorough history and the formulation of a diagnosis, we will develop a comprehensive action plan that includes recommended rehabilitative exercises, stretching, therapeutic soft tissue massage, and nutritional, ergonomic, and lifestyle counseling.

For common conditions, like low back pain, it is often a recommended treatment. Chiropractic offers supportive and complementary treatments for a variety of conditions that involves the neuromusculoskeletal system.

What is Pre-Hab?

Pre-hab ‘prehabilitation’ refers to exercises that are preventative.

Prehab is a form of exercise that may involve strength training, stability or mobility exercises, stretching, and form correction with the specific aim of preventing injuries from creeping up on you. It can be seamlessly be incorporated into your morning routine, warm up or cool down, and is important for maintaining physical fitness and athletic performance. The goals involved include strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility, motor patterning and programming, develop proprioception, and increasing tissue tolerance and health.

Originally pre-hab was used to prepare you for surgery but now can be used by everyone and anyone. Prehabilitation has been shown to improve outcomes following surgery, decreasing pain, and preventing complications, particularly in those who were previously inactive prior to a hip or knee replacement.

Joint Manipulation and Mobilization

Joint Manipulation is commonly known as spinal adjustments or chiropractic adjustments, and is a therapy used to restore normal range of motion in a joint and for pain reduction. Often an audible crack or pop can be heard which is created from the release of gas bubbles from the joint fluid (think of opening a jar and hearing it pop off).

Spinal adjustments work by providing an analgesic effect by inhibiting peripheral pain through stimulating mechanoreceptors in the joint capsule. Endorphins are also released which contribute to the pain reduction. Adjustments also promote synovial fluid circulation which provides cartilage the nutrition it needs to heal and reduce local inflammation.

Joint manipulations also work by ‘resetting’ local proprioceptors (which tell your brain where your body part is in relative space), and by stimulating a stretch-reflex through golgi tendon bodies and muscle spindles. Joint Mobilizations are a lower grade of movement that gentle oscillates the joints that have restrictive mechanical movement.

Rehabilitation

With a name like Rehab Hero, our primary focus is to restore your normal movement with the use of rehabilitation or rehab exercises. These types of exercises involve restoring normal joint range of motion, motor reprogramming and motor patterning, stretching and strengthening. These types of exercise are essential for long term results in reducing pain, recovering tissues to their pre-injury state (or even stronger than their pre-injury state), and reducing the risk of re-injury in the future.

These types of exercises are not just limited to those who have undergone surgical procedures or acute traumatic injuries (fractures, sprains, strains), but is also used for minor injuries, aches, and pains. Rehab exercises have also been shown to have the greatest impact for reducing pain.

Soft Tissue Therapy

Soft Tissue Therapy includes any type of hands-on therapy that targets the muscles, ligaments, and tendons of your body. This may include myofascial release therapy, deep tissue massage, or sports massage. It can be used for sports and overuse injuries alike, and is used to help muscles to return to their normal structure and function. Within this category also includes modalities such as cupping, instrument assisted soft tissue therapy (aka scrapping), and percussive massage (massage gun).
